Matthew 14:24 “Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves “.

Once my husband and I in celebration of our marriage went on a glassbottom boat to look at exotic fish. We had to go out into deep water to view them. But lo and behold while we were out there enjoying the beauty of creation a squall came out of nowhere. Instead of calm waters we were now being lashed by stinging waves and our captain had to beat a hasty retreat to the shore. It took us some time to get back as we were a good distance from shore. We were taught a good lesson that day about the unpredictability of storms and how they can turn your life around.

The disciples in our story were in the middle of a storm. Having been forced by Jesus to go into the boat to cross to the other side without him, they were in the fight for their lives. Remember that there were seasoned fishermen like Peter, James and John on this boat and yet they were not exempt from the fear as the storm had them in its grip. Imagine fighting heavy waves from early evening until three the next morning after a long day of serving over 15000 people. The storm did not wait until they were rested. No they had their faith tested at the most trying time.

This story reminds us that everyone experiences storms in their lives. None of us are exempt. It is not a matter of if we will experience storms but when, where, how often and what type of storm.

Perhaps you are going through a storm right now and you feel like you are going under. I am here to remind you of these words of Part the Waters Lord sung by Heritage Singers in 1977 “When I think I’m going under, Part the waters Lord and when I feel the waves around me calm the sea and when I cry for help oh hear me Lord and hold out your hand touch still the raging storm in me”. Psalm 61 says ” when my heart is overwhelmed,  lead me to the Rock that is higher than I . In this season of your storm, turn to that Rock who will part the storms, i.e., your Heavenly Father who is hearing your every cry.

Know that your Heavenly Father is right there beside you in the storm saying ” It’s alright…I am here! Don’t be afraid (Matt.14:27). He understands your storm and will never leave you nor forsake you. Look to him and cast all your cares on him for he cares for you.

Prayer: Father the storms are raging around us and we need to hear your words ” It is alright. I am here! Don’t be afraid. Peace be still.” Come alongside us Holy Spirit and part the waters. We throw ourselves at your mercy. In Jesus name Amen.
