“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of the light (for the fruit of the light consists of all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases God”. Ephesians 5:8-10

As a child, I enjoyed climbing fruit trees especially the orange and grapefruit trees. These trees were not only sturdy and strong for reading a good book but most importantly the goodness of the fruit. I would sit in the trees for hours eating fruits.: oranges and grapefruits running down my chin. As I grew older, my love for fruits expanded. The goodness of a mango running down my lips, apples at their crunchiness, bananas firm yet soft, naseberries , sweetsops and grapes pulp and all. Fruit though are seasonal and take time to grow and are not always available the same time you may require them. Yet season after season, the plants put out these fruits for us to enjoy. Fruits therefore are signs of life bearing plants.

In our passage God in Jesus calls us today partner with him by becoming like the fruit trees of my past by providing his fruit of all goodness to those around us. God wants us to provide that “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8) experience for persons who are missing out on the goodness of the Lord. Goodness is God’s excess love manifested as urgent active resistance against the powers of darkness that keep people disconnected from God as Light and all goodness. When we season after season put out the fruit of all goodness we transform the current and upcoming generations for the better. Our world needs to become kinder by the minute instead of focusing on me, myself and I.

The world is crying out for the fruit of all goodness which comes from Jesus the light of the world being displayed by his light through us. People need to experience God’s all goodness flowing like fountains, rivers and oceans in this world today. People need that goodness at every moment of their day cutting them off from evil. We are on assignment to make available God’s goodness visible through our daily life through generosity, compassion and empathy no matter where we are: home, work, play.

Let us pledge today to treat and pour out the goodness of the Lord Jesus Christ into all those we meet moment by moment so that our dark world can shine more brightly.

Lord Jesus I thank you for calling us to display your fruit of all goodness to the world . Fill us with your light so that the fruit of all goodness will not be sullied by our actions. In the name that is above ever other name, we pray Jesus. Amen.
