Psalm 86:11: “Teach me your way O Lord”.

Psalm 119:33 “Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end”.

Recently I read Psalm 119 and was fascinated how many times the Psalmist asked God to teach him in accordance with His word.  The words of the psalm literally leapt off the pages of the King James Version as it reminded me that God’s word gives life, light, understanding, knowledge and wisdom.

If we were to strip our lives to the bare essentials we would realize that these things are all we need to navigate the ‘so called’ insurmountable challenges of this life.  With God at the helm abundant life is ours, we would live and walk in His Light and He would provide the knowledge, wisdom and understanding for us to discern and create the dreams, visions, inventions and interventions that are needed in our world today.

For this to happen we have to take up the posture of a student.  A student is one that recognizes that he or she does not know and must learn from the Master Teacher.  God therefore is inviting us to sit at His feet and learn from him. He wants to give us extraordinary insights and solutions for our challenges of today, for nothing is impossible with God (Luke 1:37).  One of my favourite songs from primary school was written by a music teacher, Benjamin Ramsey (1919): TEACH ME THY WAY O LORD.   This song has been such a blessing to me over the years and at particular junctions of my life the words point me back to God for direction.  I share the words with you:

TEACH ME THY WAY O LORD  Benjamin Ramsey (1919)

  1. Teach me Thy way, O Lord, teach me Thy way!
    Thy guiding grace afford, teach me Thy way!
    Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight;
    Lead me with heav’nly light, teach me Thy way!
  2. When I am sad at heart, teach me Thy way!
    When earthly joys depart, teach me Thy way!
    In hours of loneliness, in times of dire distress,
    In failure or success, teach me Thy way!
  3. When doubts and fears arise, teach me Thy way!
    When storms o’erspread the skies, teach me Thy way!
    Shine through the cloud and rain, through sorrow, toil and pain;
    Make Thou my pathway plain, teach me Thy way!
  4. Long as my life shall last, teach me Thy way!
    Where’er my lot be cast, teach me Thy way!
    Until the race is run, until the journey’s done,
    Until the crown is won, teach me Thy way!

So as you go through your day, meditate on these words, apply them and may the blessing of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit be with you now and forevermore.

PRAYER

Teach me your way O Lord as I make decisions daily that have eternal consequences.  Help me to listen to you speaking to me and give me whatever it takes to obey.  I know you desire truth in the innermost part of my being so I surrender myself to your will knowing that you know what is best for me.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
