Jeremiah 31:21 “Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Take note of the highway, the road that you take.

Everyone remembers the childhood story of the little boy who left a trail of breadcrumbs as his road signs to get back home.  Unfortunately for him, his road signs were eaten by birds.

Signs are important in our lives because they normally give us instructions, directions or plain old information.  Signs if not properly placed can lead us in wrong directions.  We can end up in places that can lead us into danger because we took the wrong road.   In fact we can become so dependent on signs that if all other things are pointing to the contrary we believe the signs over the other clues in our environment (John 4:48 “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.”).

In the Jeremiah 31 passage the Lord was giving comfort to his people.  He indicated that they should restrain from weeping; their work will be rewarded.   Then he says these very interesting words: “Set up road signs; put up guideposts. Take note of the highway, the road that you take. Return…to your towns…the Lord will create a new thing…refresh the weary and satisfy the faint”.

For some of us the signs and guideposts need to say: “Never again to Return”; “No turning back”, One Way, Eternal Life Up Ahead and “Right Turn Only, This Way to Home”.  The prodigal Son was one such person who had such sign posts (Luke 15:11-32).

What are the signs and guideposts that we need to put up?  What roads and highways do we need to take note of so that we can return to the Lord and see him create new things in our lives, refreshing us where we are weary and satisfying us where we are faint?

When these signs and guideposts go up, they will not only lead us home, but will also help others in find their way home.

The greatest sign and guidepost we have is Jesus.  Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through Him (John 14:6). Jesus came to point us to God, to be the bridge to the Father.  Accept Jesus today and you will never be lost again as daily He leads us down the highways and roads of life.

PRAYER

Father we come to you through Jesus Christ the Way.  May we go with you to the highways that are less traveled and unpopular but which will lead to eternal life.  Thank you for Jesus.  Amen.
